Beer battered fried cauliflower, a perfect side for the holidays! I’m excited to announce that in addition to my regular blogging, I’ve started cotributing content to Atlanta Black Star along with a few other amazing and talented black food bloggers. First up is a series of Global Grub Potlucks featuring our collective recipes. My contribution is these fried cauliflower florets.
What I like most about this fried cauliflower recipe is the fact that you can take a simple, humble ingredient like cauliflower and easily turn it into something special. With intense flavors and a delightful crust you will enjoy these delicious vegetables.
Cauliflower is often used as a low carb substitute to many starchy vegetables, but most are unaware of its benefit as a carrier for other strong flavored ingredients given it’s moderate flavor profile. I liken it to vodka and it’s use in cocktails. Vodka is clear and relatively tasteless making it a ‘go to’ spirit for the most creative mixologists as you can enhance it with pretty much any ingredient and flavor. Cauliflower’s mellowness means it’s capable of taking on the flavors of whatever its cooked with especially any aromatics and spices. You are only limited by your imagination. In this way cauliflower can be fried, roasted, smoked, etc.
The beer batter gives the fried cauliflower a nice airy and crisp texture while the jerk spice provides additional character. Feel free to experiment with different beer styles and seasonings, as by altering these levers you can vary the taste profile to your personal preference and style.
