Sotol Margarita

Twist on classic margarita on the rocks. Sotol replaces tequila and is partnered with cognac for a smooth, flavorful cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz sotol
  • 1 oz cognac
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • Ice
  • 1 oz lime juice

Instructions

  • Fill a shaker full of ice. Add sotol, cognac, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds until hands get really cold from the shaker.
  • Salt the rim of a glass by rubbing the rim with a lime wedge. Invert the glass and rub the rim on a salted plate.
  • Pour margarita ingredients from the shaker into the glass. Garnish with a lime. Serve

Notes

Sotol distribution is growing, but still can be difficult to find in certain markets. Tequila and mezcal are fine substitutes in this recipe.
There are lots good cognacs out there. I used Pierre Ferrand Ambre which I like a lot.
When salting the rim, focus on the outside part of the rim. I prefer to only salt the outside to avoid salt falling into the drink. The salt can throw things out of balance flavor-wise if it’s mixed into the drink.
