Air fryers also cook the hot dogs quickly and evenly, saving you time in the kitchen. With its precise temperature control, you can achieve consistent and reliable results every time.

Beats and Eats (music to pair with air fryer hot dogs)

Hot Dogs are simple (it's meat and a bun after all) but fully customizable in so many different ways. In Chicago there are rules to hot dog making kinda like Texas has its rules for chili.

Despite all of this, everybody has their own particular way they like theirs. Diamond D's "This One" captures that raw, emotional love we all carry for that one hot dog style. For me it's a beef hot dog on a plain bun topped with mustard, relish, and sport peppers.

Air Fryer Hot Dog Ingredients

  • Beef Hot Dogs
  • Hot Dog Buns
  • Hot Dog Toppings
  • Olive Oil

How To Air Fry Hot Dogs (step by step)

It's really pretty simple to make hot dogs, as it should be. Whether you boil, grill, cook on a stick, an air fryer is just as simple, but involves fewer variables.

Step 1

Pre-heat the air fryer to 400 degrees F

Step 2

Add the hot dogs to the preheated air fryer leaving adequate space between each. Air fry hot dogs for 4-6 minutes depending on hot dog size. Smaller, thinner dogs require less time.

Step 3

Brush the inside of the buns with olive oil. Place on baking sheet smooth side down and broil at 450 degrees for 2-3 minutes depending on how brown and toasty you want them. Set aside the cooked hot dogs.

Step 4

Assemble your air fried hot dogs however you prefer.

Air Fryer Hot Dogs Cooking Considerations and Tips

I used simple and plain beef hot dogs, but feel free to your preferred meat of choice. Bratwurst, andouille sausage, chorizo, Beyond the Meat sausage, etc. all work similarly but will vary on cook time.

Toasting your bun is optional, as is how you toast it. I go with simple brush of olive oil and then toast under the broiler. Broiling can be a scary proposition for some because it's easy to burn the buns if you're not paying attention.

Be as creative or simple in your toppings selection as you prefer. I had fun this go around using different condiments and topping combination based on what I had available. I keep things like pickled red onions, pico de gallo, fancy hot sauce, and zhoug sauce on hand most of the time. I had leftover West African Suya seasoning from the beef suya I had made a few days earlier. For more topping ideas try eat this not that.

How To Select The Best Hot Dogs

When it comes to selecting high-quality hot dogs for optimal flavor, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Read the Label: Look for hot dogs made with high-quality ingredients, such as premium cuts of meat like beef or pork, and avoid those with artificial fillers, additives, or preservatives.

Check the Ingredients: Opt for hot dogs that have a short and straightforward ingredient list, preferably with recognizable and natural ingredients. Avoid hot dogs that contain excessive amounts of sodium, nitrates, or other additives.

Consider the Brand Reputation: Choose hot dog brands known for their commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Research customer reviews and feedback to ensure you're selecting a reputable brand.

Look for Natural Casings: Natural casings, typically made from animal intestines, can enhance the texture and flavor of the hot dog. They provide a satisfying snap when bitten into and contribute to a more authentic eating experience.

Seek Local or Artisanal Options: Explore local butcher shops or specialty food stores that offer handmade or artisanal hot dogs. These often prioritize using high-quality ingredients and may have unique flavor combinations. My butcher shop has all kinds of wild game meat hot dogs. I love a good venison dog!

Remember, the quality of the hot dogs you select will have a significant impact on the overall flavor of your dish. By prioritizing high-quality ingredients and reputable brands, you'll enhance the taste and enjoyment of your hot dog experience.

How To Season/Flavor Your Hot Dogs

To enhance the flavor of your hot dogs, here are a variety of seasonings you can try:

Classic Mustard: Tangy and slightly spicy, mustard is a classic condiment that pairs well with hot dogs. Choose from yellow, Dijon, spicy brown, or whole grain mustard for different flavor profiles.

Ketchup: I'm not a ketchup on my hot dog kinda guy, but if that's your thing, then go for it. Ketchup adds a touch of sweetness and tanginess to hot dogs. Opt for a high-quality ketchup or try flavored variations like spicy ketchup for an extra kick or perhaps even your own homemade ketchup.

Relish: Sweet pickle relish or dill relish can add a burst of flavor and texture to your hot dogs. Choose the one that complements your taste preferences.

Onion: Sauteed or caramelized onions can bring a savory and slightly sweet flavor to your hot dogs. They add a delicious depth of flavor and a hint of natural sweetness.

Sauerkraut: This fermented cabbage provides a tangy and slightly sour taste that pairs well with hot dogs. It adds a refreshing crunch and complements the flavors of the meat.

Chili: A hearty and flavorful addition, chili can elevate your hot dog experience. Whether it's classic beef chili, vegetarian chili, or spicy bean chili, it adds richness and complexity. BTW I love a good chili cheese dog!

Cheese: Melted cheese, such as cheddar, American, or Swiss, can add a creamy and savory element to your hot dogs. Drizzle the cheese on top or stuff it inside the bun for a gooey delight.

Hot Sauce: If you enjoy some heat, hot sauce is a great option. Choose from mild to fiery varieties to add a kick of spiciness and depth to your hot dogs.

Herbs and Spices: Experiment with herbs and spices like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, or dried oregano to add extra flavor to your hot dogs. Celery salt is a big deal in Chicago.

Remember, the choice of seasonings is subjective, so feel free to mix and match according to your taste preferences. Enhancing the flavors with a variety of seasonings will take your hot dogs to the next level of deliciousness.

Choosing The Right Buns

I don't know about you, but I like my hot dogs in buns. But when it comes to choosing the best buns for hot dogs, it's all about personal preference. Here are a few popular options to consider:

Classic Hot Dog Buns: Soft and squishy, these buns are specifically designed to perfectly hold a hot dog. They have a split down the middle and a light texture, allowing for easy toppings.

New England Style Buns: Also known as "lobster roll" buns, these buns have a unique shape and are often toasted on the sides. They provide a buttery and slightly sweet flavor that complements the hot dog.

Pretzel Buns: These buns have a chewy and slightly salty exterior, which adds a delicious twist to the traditional hot dog. They provide a nice contrast of textures and flavors.

Brioche Buns: Rich and buttery, brioche buns offer a slightly sweet flavor and a fluffy texture. They add a touch of indulgence to your hot dog and can elevate the overall taste.

Ultimately, the best bun is one that suits your taste preferences and complements the flavors of the hot dog and toppings. Experiment with different types of buns to find your favorite combination.

Alternative Ways of Cooking Hot Dogs

While the air fryer is a fantastic way to cook hot dogs, here are a few alternative cooking methods and variations to try:

Grilled Hot Dogs: Fire up the grill for that classic smoky flavor. Cook the hot dogs over medium-high heat, turning occasionally until they're nicely charred on the outside.

Pan-Fried Hot Dogs: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil. Cook the hot dogs, turning them occasionally, until they're browned and heated through. This method gives a slightly crispy texture.

Boiled Hot Dogs: Bring a pot of water to a simmer and add the hot dogs. Cook them for about 5-7 minutes or until heated through. Boiling is a quick and simple method, ideal for large gatherings.

Broiled Hot Dogs: Place the hot dogs on a baking sheet and broil them in the oven on high heat. Keep a close eye on them and turn them occasionally to ensure even browning.

Grilled Sausages: Switch things up by using different types of sausages instead of traditional hot dogs. Bratwurst, Italian sausage, or chorizo can add extra flavor and variety to your meal.

Special Equipment Needed

I use a Nu Wave 8 quart air fryer. It's the ideal size for both cooking and storage. I also prefer the front-loading style that makes it convenient to load and unload food.
