Creamy strawberry oatmeal recipe featuring old-fashioned oats cooked on the stovetop in an almond-milk and orange juice-based broth then topped with fresh strawberries for a totally not boring breakfast.
Oats cooked in different liquids like fruit juices is some mystical oatmeal brewing ish and one of my favorite ways to enjoy my daily oatmeal.
Oatmeal Ingredients
- Old-Fashioned Oats
- Orange Juice
- Almond Milk
- Strawberries
- Honey
- Orange Zest
How to cook oatmeal in fruit juice (step by step)
There is nothing tricky about cooking oatmeal in a non-water/non-dairy based liquid. It’s the same directions just a different liquid source. For next-level flavor I like to toast the oats a little in ghee or regular butter before cooking.
So this recipe calls for an even split of almond milk and orange juice. You get those resting elements of fresh OJ along with the aroma of the orange zest. For next-level flavor and taste experience, you can steep fresh basil leaves in the liquid before adding the oats.
Serving Suggestion
Serve the strawberry oatmeal with zest from an orange and sliced fresh strawberries.
Tips for making oatmeal
- Change the ratio for OJ: Almond milk as you see fit and depending on your taste profile
- Add a dollop of Greek yogurt to the finished oatmeal for additional creaminess and more protein
- Use not from concentrate orange juice. Go no pulp as well to avoid texture weirdness.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I use frozen strawberries?
Yes indeed either fresh or frozen work equally well though you can never top fresh from a flavor standpoint. If using frozen I definitely recommend adding the strawberries during cooking vs. adding at the end as a topping.
What kind of oats work best?
Old fashioned or quick oats are your best bests. You don’t have to cook them, but they easily blend. Steel cuts you should avoid unless you don’t mind a very chewy and grainy smoothie.
Can this recipe be converted to overnight oats?
Yes, this can be done rather easily. You’ll have to definitely exclude the basil, but everything else will be the same. Just mix the orange juice, almond milk, and honey well then mix in the oats and refrigerate overnight. Add the zest before serving.
